BOOK RELEASE- “THERE!”
by: Brett Redmayne-Titley.
Greeting to my readers, friends and lovers of my on-scene reporting. Finally, I have the pleasure of announcing my first book, “THERE!”
Presented in eighteen chapters, “THERE!” brings you a series of my most popular on-scene reports from current events in many locales around the world.
To begin your journey into my many stories, perhaps you should know how I began that journey myself. It seems like a life time, but that, as you will read, is because when on-scene time, during those crazy days, almost stands still.
Presented for your reading pleasure, the short Forward to: “THERE!”
FOREWORD.
My entry into journalism began on a clear Sunday morning in November 2011.
The Occupy movement had established its largest camp on the grounds of Los Angeles City Hall. Some 1700 tents and 3200 occupiers stayed there full time as part of a national protest for systemic change.
That national protest was by societal necessity growing fast.
Like many, I had heard much about Occupy and I supported it in general. But I was, like the majority, merely part of the apathetic.
I was driving that day south away from LA but listening to the KNX-AM radio news. On came the story that, after more than two months, the LA City council had now had enough of this fledgling opposition and demanded that the Occupiers take their democracy and go home now.
That night the police were going to forcibly evict all the Occupiers at 5PM.
There was only one way to stop this eviction, what I, in my first GOOD article, coined as the First Rule of Democracy: When the people outnumber the forces of government, the people WILL win!
As the radio news piece finished, I was furious. Not with the LA council, not with the cops who were coming en masse. No. I was furious with myself. Yes. Opinions I had. Actions I did not.
I was, until that moment… a complete hypocrite.
I turned off at the next exit, went directly north to my home, grabbed a day pack, pens, pencils, pads of paper, some food and my swim goggles and went directly north to the LA camp.
As documented in my series, written that night directly from the camp while interviewing dozens of protesters, this night would change me forever.
From the City Hall steps I scrawled viciously, calling my wonderful wife who transcribed each piece and then emailed it directly to my editor who put out each piece immediately. Readership grew by the hour.
The world was watching! I had the story. The real story. As night fell that story only got better. And better.
Throughout that afternoon and evening the crowd swelled as people like myself came from all over southern California to show their support for Occupy. These were young and old, businessmen and women, White, Black, Asian, Hispanic. Every walk of life descended on the camp. It swelled more each hour. As I stood on the steps of city hall, I watched this crowd undulate like an animal ready to strike, the cops stock still in phalanges two deep, all in black, face masks on and surrounding the camp on all four city streets, all fingering their cans of mace and Billie clubs while staring with obvious venom into the eyes of the protesters.
What I reported was democracy in its purest sense. Us vs. Them.
And there were definitely more of us.
The protesters blared support through bullhorns but regularly reminded everyone to stay calm, stay non-violent because, “The whole world is watching! The whole world is watching.”
Then…
As I documented in the final chapter of that night, “The First Rule of Democracy,” at 5:17 AM, with the first rays of the new day just breaking through a crystal clear morning and with 3500 rapid cops salivating to beat the living shit out of the 6000- plus passionately non-violent protesters who stood nose to nose against all that kinetic brute force, well those cops, after twelve hours on the knife’s edge of a riot, those cops.. they took one full step…backwards!
I will never forget that tremendous cheer! We had won! The cops were going home. This was victory! US vs. THEM. And…WE…had won!
With that cheer, my future as a journalist- whatever that would be- it was born.

Fascinating that your career as a journalist began decades after mine ended. Do bear in mind that courage is contagious.
Living in a single-stoplight county in the Northwoods of Minnesota since making a decision to abandon L.A. after half a year of deep engagement in movement politicization; I'm quite proud of a couple of facts: One--with 5 credits to go after failing a distribution course while in pursuit of an honors degree in history at the U. of Mn...I shitcanned it and talked my way into a downtown Mpls ad agency as a copywriter. That concluded half a year later and immediately resolved into editing a weekly suburban newspaper...and on from there the next year off in '69 to S.F.to join the "Heavies"...thence to SoCal. Two---now nearing age 79, I'm also proud of never having an income as high as $10K per annum.
We do have a brief history ensuing from your too brief appearance on Unz Review, at which time I got in contact and you responded.
In part, due to Summer energies go to resurrection of gardens at my semi-abandoned homestead, my first book remains in a state of stasis after 46 years of channeling a trans-abstract alphabet where each of our post-Latin version, is letter by letter transliterated into symbol form. Poets, artists, visionaries and young children would constitute the probable market for such a venture. Kernel of the concept is that abstractions engender obstructions.
Contemporary cult-sure, particularly here in the U$$A is not only batshit crazy, but suffers from rapidly metastasizing constipation. Ever since development by the Phoenicians of their abstract COMMERCIAL alphabet, abstractions centering on a near-terminal case of leftbrain overload have effectually doomed the regnant paradigm. "The center cannot hold, mere anarchy is loosed upon the land". Those pregnant words are now more than a century old.
Holistic thinking as well as intuition and connexion with cosmic perspectives while thoroughly imbued with regular congress with the manifestations of the natural world have long been denigrated and desecrated by the bitch goddess of materialistic "progress"...going forward, of course.
My budget and energy considerations unfortunately for now anyway, preclude a purchase and thorough perusal of "There". However, while envying your travels and travails...perhaps not so much the latter as I've had a few of my own...you have my best wishes on your enterprising production...AND all possible magic in transmuting Gertrude Stein's proclamation on Oakland by your provision of "THERE" there.
All the best. -carstie
